How Do You See God?

"Soon afterward Jesus went with His disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed Him. A funeral procession was coming out as He approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. When the Lord saw her, His heart overflowed with compassion. 'Don’t cry!' He said. Then He walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. 'Young man,' He said, 'I tell you, get up.' Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother." Luke 7:11-15 NLT

This story really touches my heart. It speaks to me of God's heart toward us. This poor widow had not only lost her husband, now she had lost her son. Her only son. She was in dire straights. There were no welfare or social service programs back in Jesus' day. The widow would be at the mercy of those around her. She might have to beg. She could be swindled or taken advantage of. She was heart broken.

Enter Jesus. He surveys the scene. He realizes the widow's situation. His heart is overcome with compassion. He touches her dead son. There were no coffins. That is how the translators rendered the text. In fact, the boy's body was laying on a stretcher. Jesus now, according to the Jewish law, becomes unclean by touching a dead person. He doesn't seem to mind. With the authority only He has, Jesus raises the boy to life!

How do you see God? Is He waiting to get you? Is He disappointed with you? Does He barely tolerate you? I think that we misunderstand God. He is love. His desire is only for our very best. We don't know anything more about this widow and her son. They may or may not have become followers of Jesus. We just don't know. And it doesn't seem to make a difference to Jesus. His love for the mother and her son was unconditional. No strings attached.

Please understand, God loves you. He delights in you. His desire is to spend eternity with you. So, how do you see God?

Butterfly Feelings

"I give you thanks, O LORD, with all my heart; I praise Your name for Your unfailing love and faithfulness; for Your promises are back by all the honor of Your name." Psalm 138:1-2 NLT

Something wonderful happened this weekend. My brother Zack gave his heart to the Lord. It was a long time coming but what rejoicing!

And that got me thinking. Do you remember when you first made your decision? Did you have that butterflies in your stomach feeling? That excitement like you knew something new and wonderful was happening, yet nervous about what that all meant?

You couldn't get enough--you read your Bible every chance you got, you attended every small group you could find and fit in your schedule. You were consumed.

But as time goes on, the feeling mellows out. You don't do as much--your schedule gets too full with life to fit in Bible reading times, small groups, church. The love is still there, it's just that the excitement isn't there anymore.

Wouldn't it be wonderful the be in the stage that Zack is now? Everything is still new and fresh and exciting. It can be you know. His promises are true and always there--it's us that have allowed our feelings to become tired. Like any relationship, we need to work on our part to keep it true and valid.

My prayer for Zack is that he never loses that "in love" butterfly feeling stage. That his walk grows stronger and stronger with each passing day. That he finds something new and exciting each and every time that he opens his Bible. And that is also my prayer for you.

What a gift my Lord has given to me. Now not only is Zack my brother of the flesh, but now he is also my brother of the spirit! Thank you Jesus!

"As soon as I pray, You answer me; You encourage me by giving me strength." Psalm 138:3 NLT

Life's Balance

"O God, I beg two favors from you;
let me have them before I die.
First, help me never to tell a lie.
Second, give me neither poverty nor riches!
Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.
For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say,
'Who is the Lord?'
And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus
insult God's holy name." Proverbs 30:7-9 NLT

I dream big. There are times when I get tired of the struggles of life. Like you, I have bills and I worry about how I will be able to pay them. So I make a plan of attack. I could do this, I could do that. I could cut this out. Then I dream crazy thoughts of winning the lottery--then all my worries would be over! OK Lord, I'm ready, bless me!

God doesn't do it that way. Instead of me planning my solution, I should be allowing the Lord to be planning my solution--my life--for me. He knows my needs before I am even aware of them. He knows the solution, the dream, the plan, that will best suit me and my life.

I want the easy way out. But sometimes the less easy is the way that we learn the lesson we were suppose to--those are the times that God's sovern care comes to light. God knows the perfect balance of easy/hard--poverty/riches. And you know, it is true, sometimes when the road is too smooth, we do tend to forget that we are NOT the ones in charge, paving this road. It's our heavenly Father.

How do you tend to deal with the rough roads in your life? Do you worry, fret, stress out? Or do you accept the comfort that you can release this situation to the Lord with the knowledge that He will do with it what is best for you?

In life everything needs to be in balance. As in your diet, if you have too much sweets and not enough protein, your body will react badly. And who knows that balance best in your life than your Heavenly Father. Just humbly ask Him to please guide your life the way He's planned it to be. He will gladly honor your request.

Our Guide

"Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations. For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and He will guide us until we die." Psalm 48:13,14 NLT

I used to be a horseback tour guide. I would take people on guided saddle trips. Some were day long trips, others were overnight. People put their confidence in me and my ability to keep them safe while we were in the wilderness, and get them safely back to the stables.

I know what it feels like to put your life in the hands of someone. We have lived in and around Yosemite National Park for 20 years. Yosemite is the rock climbing capital of the world. I can think of times when I was climbing. I would be shaking, scared, not sure where to place my next foot or hand. I would hear the reassuring voice of the rock climbing guide directing my moves, encouraging, and supporting me.

The psalmist describes God as a fortress of protection and constant guide for us. We do not have to face life and death alone and without hope. When we choose to place our lives in the hand of Jesus, He will protect and direct us...for eternity.

What mountain are you trying to climb? What fear are you facing? What danger looms over you? Put your faith and confidence in our living and eternal hope, Jesus Christ!

Purpose

"For Christ didn’t send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News." 1 Corinthians 1:17 NLT

This verse really ministers to me. In fact, I find it very freeing. I appreciate what Paul is saying. In full time vocational ministry, it is very easy to get overwhelmed. A pastor can forget what he or she has been called to do. The next thing you know, your working at a lot of different things and burning out. The same can be true for all of us. We can do too much of a good thing and not be doing the God thing.

It is important that we discover our purpose. What are we gifted at doing? Then, what are we called to do? For example, two people may be gifted at being pastors. But what about their calling? One may be called to pastor a large church in Chicago, the other is called to pastor a biker church in Detroit. Two people may be called to teach. One teaches a seniors Sunday school class, another mentors street kid's.

Understanding our purpose enables us to enjoy our calling, serve with passion and effectiveness. Sometimes we have to rearrange our lives to free up time and energy to do what God has called and equipped us to do. Pray and ask God to show you what he plans for you to do. Don't feel guilty about saying no to something that is a distraction.

What has God called you to do with your life? what are you doing? What is getting in the way? What are you going to do about it?

It's Not All About Me

"Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. don't look out only for our own interests, but take an interest in others, too." Philippians 2:3-4 NLT

Do you know someone like that? Someone that always is thinking about themselves and trying to keep the focus on them? They call, they have all the drama. They have to tell you all they are unhappy about. Someone did this to them. They don't get to go to places that their friends get to go to. The story could go on and on. Do they ever ask how you are doing?

God wants us to be servers. To think of others. We are important and we need to take care of ourselves, but when your whole focus is on what is in this for me--why can't I have--I deserve that too--we're in the danger zone of selfeshness.

Instead of waiting to see what people are going to do for you, why don't you try to do for them. It is amazing how your attitude can change. God challenges us to serve one another. It's good for the spirit and the soul.

When we figure out that the world wasn't created to center around "me", that looking out for the happiness and well-being of others is a more rewarding pursuit, I think we would be a more satisfied, complete human being.

"Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love." Galatians 5:13 NLT

Treasures

"Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be." Matthew 6:21 NLT

The world is full of treasures. Treasures from the past, of the present, and even the future. But what about you? What do you treasure? Do you treasure things of this world, or do you treasure things of God's world?

It's easy to fall into the trap of the world and treasure worldly things. We need this, we need that, the latest gadget, the most money-making IRA, the best security system to protect all our treasures, the list could go on.

But what about the treasures in this world that aren't materialistic? How about the treasures of family, friends, faith and love? How about the treasure of cherished memories, first kisses, walks on beaches, strolls in the rain? The treasure of relationships restored that once were broken, of forgiveness of a wrong done, of a wonderful laugh shared, of comforting a stranger, bringing the gift of salvation to someone?

I'm sure you know this, but our Lord is very wise. He knew that we are a people that like to put value on things and the things that have most value to us, is where our hearts tend to be loyal to. So, He is advising us that it is very important to treasure the correct things because treasuring the wrong things, will lead us to desiring wrong things.

So, what do you treasure? Pray to your Lord to help guide you to treasure the things that He wants you to and put aside the things that are not from Him. He will treasure that request.

"Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths will eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven..." Matthew 6:19-20 NLT

Freedom

"Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus.'" 1 Timothy 1:14 NLT

As I was praying about what to write about today and searching the Bible, my Lord brought me to this verse.

I wondered, why this verse Lord? It's so simple. So short. But then, as I read it for about the third time, my spirit and heart started feeling something. It started out small and deep inside me and as the feeling swelled, my whole body got warm and tingly. Like when you're fishing and suddenly, after all day not catching anything--wham--a tug, a pull--and then your whole body is alive, filled with anticipation of seeing what you had caught!

This is what got me excited. My God loves me so much, that even though I am a sinner, which I try very hard not to be--but still am--He fills me with His faith and His love. He fills me. That phrase means that He doesn't give me just half or a quarter of His faith and love. It means that He gives me all of His faith and love. Isn't that awesome!

My Father's faith and love in me isn't based on how good or not good I am. It's unconditional. When I have lost faith in myself, my Father hasn't. When I feel myself unlovable, my Father loves me even more. It's not about how I see me--it's about how my Father sees me. How freeing!

The next time you lose faith in yourself--don't--your Father hasn't. The next time you stop loving yourself--don't--your Father didn't. Just turn around and give Him all your feelings, situation, heart and soul and He will take it and make it whole again.

"And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love." Romans 8:38 NLT

What a Team

"One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and He prayed to God all night. At daybreak He called together all of His disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names:
Simon (whom he named Peter), Andrew (Peter’s brother), James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the zealot), 16 Judas (son of James), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed Him)."
Luke 6:12-16 NLT

I look at the list of men that Jesus commissioned to be the founders of His Church. These are the men that would carry on His work after His death, resurrection, and ascension. These were common men. Blue collar worker, tax collectors, political activists. They fought, they didn't always get it when Jesus spoke, they struggled with their faith, they were selfishly ambitious, they were deserters and deniers. They were the board of directors of the early church. What a team!

God doesn't always do things the way we do. In the cooperate world a company will search high and low for the best equipped person to fill a position. God calls people that are not always the most qualified. In fact most of the time He chooses people that are in desperate need for God to move in their lives to accomplish His will. He doesn't call the equipped, He equips the called.

There is also great diversity within the Church. We come from different lifestyles, experience, tradition, personalities and bias. We need to practice love and grace with each other. This requires submitting to the work of the Holy Spirit and yielded lives. When those first apostles submitted completely to Christ and the ministry to the Holy Spirit, the world was turned upside down as the Kingdom of God advanced in power.

The time is different, but the calling is the same. What a team!

Imitation

"Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children." Ephesians 5:1 NLT

I enjoy watching impressionists. When I was young, I really liked Rich Little. It seemed that whenever he imitated any celebrity, no matter who it was, he looked and sounded just like them. It has been said that imitation is one of the highest forms of flattery. Just watch a little girl dressing up like her mother. A son that puts on his father's boots. A little leaguer that holds his bat just like his favorite baseball player. Imitation is a sign of respect.

Paul tells us to imitate God. We are called to become like Jesus. How do we do this? One way is through the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. But there's more. When we want to imitate someone we study them closely. If possible we spend time with them. We apply how they live or act to our lives. We can study and spend time with Jesus through the study of the Bible, in prayer, with fellow Christians and in serving others.

Why do we imitate God? Because we are His children. His dear children. Holy and dearly loved.

One of the highest forms of respect may be imitation. Wouldn't you love to hear someone say of you; "Their just like their Father!"

This Too Shall Pass

"Then Jesus turned to His disciples and said,

'God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.

What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man.When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way.

Sorrows Foretold “What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now. What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow. What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets.'"
Luke 6:20-26 NLT

When I read this passage, it reminded me of something an elderly woman once told me. We were sitting by her dying son. This woman had already suffered her share of pain. She had lost her daughter and husband within a year. Now she held her son's hand. She looked at me and said, "My dad always told me, 'This too shall pass.'"

Jesus told His listeners that they would not always be poor, hungry, or grieving. There would be a time when a great blessing and reward would be theirs. He also told those that were enjoying and depending on their present condition of wealth, status, and pleasures, to beware; those things are temporal and passing away. We fall into a trap of false hope and security when we put our hope in them.

We can get caught up in the here and now. It's easy to forget the blessings of Christ's Kingdom and focus on our problems. In our problems we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus not only promises blessings for the future, but encouragement and strength for today.

What are you struggling with? This too shall pass away. Our only constant is Jesus.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away." Matthew 24:35 NIV

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8 NIV

In the Darkness

"Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning...You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!" Psalm 30:5,11-12 NLT

We all go through times of mourning. We live in a broken world. The people and things we love break, and die. We make mistakes, big ones. They effect us and those we love. Someone hurts you. We live and we mourn.

There is hope during the night, or darkness of mourning. The God of all comfort and hope is nearer than we can know or feel. He will do what you cannot. He will turn your mourning into dancing. He will take away your clothes of mourning. He will fill you with joy, praise and thanksgiving.

Are you in the night of mourning? Are you feeling like there is no way you will ever be restored? Wait for the dawn of God's grace. He will restore you.

Incomplete

"Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! 10 But when full understanding comes, these partial things will become useless.

When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love."

1 Corinthians 13:9-13 NLT

I find comfort and encouragement from these words written by the apostle Paul. The one question that is asked when you are with someone who is dying is "why?" Companies make strategic plans to gain record revenues. When the plans fail or succeed beyond expectations the board of directors asks "why?"

We have many questions in this life. Sometimes it seems that there are many more questions than answers. In fact there are. Our knowledge is limited. The demands of life, unlimited. We find ourselves lacking.

When we seek to find answers from the Lord, it seems He gives us what we need. Just what we needed. Sometimes we only have enough direction to take life moment by moment. "Give us this day our daily bread," Jesus prayed. Sometimes we blow it. We don't get it right. Other times we hit a home run. Then there are the times that the only thing we can do is move forward blindly, trusting in God's unfailing love.

Feel His hand in the darkness. Hear the heartbeat of heavens King. His love for you is unfailing and eternal!

Today

"This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24 NLT

Do you remember to do that? I forget sometimes. Sometimes I tend to wake up and instead of thanking the Lord for the gift of a new day, I start thinking that I've got to do this, do that. Then I get all tensed up and uptight. I steal the joy from the gift of the day that my Lord had planned for me.

Why do we do that? Don't we know that each and every day is a gift, a chance to begin again? A fresh start. We do ourselves and our Lord a great disservice by not taking our gift and run with it. Run and make the most of whatever we are given.

It's another chance to make a wrong right. It's another chance to praise our Holy and Precious Lord for all His gracious wonderfulness. It's another chance to mend relationships, hug our kids, kiss our spouses, share with our friends how important they are to us, open the eyes of a stranger to the salvation of Jesus.

What are you going to do with your gift? Walk around all uptight and crabby? Or are you going to praise the Lord for the wonderful promise of today and go forth with Godly purpose? The choice is yours.

"A cheerful heart brings a smile to your face; a sad heart makes it hard to get through the day." Proverbs 15:11 The Message

Wisdom and Faith

"Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask Him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do."
James 1:2-8 NLT

We all go through difficult times in our lives. Difficult and strenuous situations require that we put our faith in the Lord. I think that I do this; most of the time. One time I was facing a difficult situation. I would handle the challenge fine. I would lay my request before God and trust in His provision. Most of the time I even had a sense of peace about our circumstance. But sometimes I would melt down. I would melt into anxiety, anger, self pity, and self reliance. The situation was over whelming and I would let it overwhelm me.

One night during one of my melt downs, Peggy my wife, had to remind me that my God was bigger than our situation. The next morning the Lord led me to the above passage. He showed me that not only was I struggling with my faith, I lacked wisdom. The lack of wisdom about how to handle my situation, was tearing me up. On top of everything else, my faith was not in God alone, but in my ability to solve our problem. My "divided loyalty" was causing me to be tossed about spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

I discovered that I had elevated myself, and other potential solutions to our problem as idols. They became my hope, not Jesus, not fully. I decided to put my trust in Jesus alone. Like the song says, He is more than able to handle what concerns me today.

I can't tell you how it all worked out because I'm still in the situation. But I can tell you that it's all good because God is good, all the time, and all the time, God is good!

Just Knowing

"Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see." Hebrews 11:1 NLT

What exactly is faith? The past couple of days, I have been sharing with you the various stages my faith has been in. As I was rereading, the thought accrued to me, some may not really understand the concept of "faith".

We are a people with the need of instant gratification. We want something, we want it now. We need to see the results of our want--instantly. If we don't, then we will go to the next place to see if we can get it faster.

But faith in God is not like that. Faith in God is just knowing.

Knowing that there is someone bigger than us, loving us and wanting us to love Him. Someone bigger than us that knows us so intimately that even every hair on our head is known--that He knew the very moment we were conceived. Someone that we can turn to, at any time of the day or night and talk to, cry with, comfort us. Someone bigger than us that wants only the best for us.

While we are on this earth, we will never see His face on facebook, find His name on a counselor's door, or see His phone number in the phonebook--but He is here. He is alive. Our faith just knows.

It is normal that we have moments of doubts in our faith. Moments when our faith seems to be shaken. Moments when we question. God understands that. It's what we do with those moments that matter. We are human--God is not. But He created us and understands us. We ride on our emotions--God does not. He is forever faithful and true.

Do you need faith? Turn to God. Do you need to renew your faith? Turn to God. How? Pick up the phone (get on your knees) and call Him (pray). He's only a phone call away.

"Jesus told them. 'I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.'” Matthew 17:20 NLT

Faith Builders

"He reached down from heaven and rescued me;
He drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my powerful enemies,
from those who hated me and were too strong for me.
They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress,
but the Lord supported me.
He led me to a place of safety;
He rescued me because He delights in me."
Psalm 18:16-19 NLT

Yesterday I wrote about struggling with our faith. I wrote about that because, that is where I was. I was struggling. But God is good. Two things happened after I wrote my blog post. I was encouraged by a friend, and the word of God. Both were faith builders for me.

Last night before our Marriage Enrichment group began, I was speaking to a friend. I was sharing with her about my faith struggle. She listened and encouraged me. She shared her life experience and reminded me of mine. She encouraged me to recall God's faithfulness to my family and myself. She shared the word of God with me. She encouraged my faith. This isn't the first time that a brother or sister in Christ has come along at just the right time, to encourage me during a low moment. I appreciate life giving friends.

Then this morning I was reading the Bible. I was in Psalms 18. The above passage spoke volumes of faith building encouragement to me. God's word has a way of doing that. The Bible says;"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Romans 10:17 KJV

The Bible says that we walk by faith. Sometimes we have the faith to move mountains. Sometimes we struggle. But God is faithful to encourage our faith in Him.

Thank God for faith builders!

My Unbelief

"One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, 'Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk. And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.'

Jesus said to them, “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.

'How long has this been happening?”'Jesus asked the boy’s father. He replied, 'Since he was a little boy. The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.'

'What do you mean, ‘If I can’?' Jesus asked. 'Anything is possible if a person believes.'

The father instantly cried out, 'I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!'

When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, He rebuked the evil spirit. 'Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,' He said. 'I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!'

Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, 'He’s dead.' But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up."
Mark 9:17-27 NLT

I can relate to the boy's father. I know what it is like to be full of faith. The kind of faith that moves mountains. I can pray for people, face troubles, and challenges with confidence. But I know what it feels like to struggle with my faith. There are some challenges that can rock my faith. I feel like I just can't take it. I see no hope. Then I remember the father in the story. He was most honest. He told Jesus, "I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!"

I'm amazed and encouraged by Jesus' response to such honesty; He healed the father's son. It encourages me to know that even though we are called to walk by faith, when we struggle, Jesus doesn't.

What faith issue are you struggling with today? Hold on to the little faith that you do have. Jesus can do the rest.
